Discover a Profound Pattern
The Lord’s Prayer is a familiar refrain for many. Perhaps you can even recite it from memory. But have you ever taken time to notice the profound emphasis at the beginning of the prayer? Discovering it will open your eyes to a powerful contrast you won’t be able to miss and a meaningful realization that will directly impact your life today.
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:9-10, KJV
More from Dr David Jeremiah:
By referring to God as His “Father,” Jesus shows us the way of personal relationship between a son and a father. Yet He does not merely say, “Our Father”; He teaches us to pray to our Father in heaven. Mentioning the place where God resides puts a different spin on it.
Jesus is careful to remind us that our Father is in heaven. The earth is His footstool, and He is a God of majesty and might who is worthy of worship. He is the glorious King, surrounded by the angelic host. God is uncommon. He is extraordinary. He is unearthly. He is separated from sinners. He is holy. God is uniquely different and above all.
And yet He is our Father! On one hand, our Father is easy to approach because we are His beloved sons and daughters; on the other hand, He is the King of the universe, clothed in heavenly glory.
We can approach Him confidently in prayer because we are His dearly beloved children, but we must never forget that He is also the Sovereign over the universe.
